The city is named after the Reverend Harris Joplin, an early European-American settler and the founder of the area’s first Methodist congregation. The town was established in 1873 and expanded significantly from the wealth created by the mining of zinc. The city gained travelers as Route 66 passed through it; “Joplin, Missouri” is named in the lyrics to Bobby Troup’s legendary song about the famous highway.

Independence, MO was identified as the center place of Zion. A temple site was dedicated on August 3, 1831. The Saints were driven from Jackson County in 1833. The Fishing River is where Joseph Smith and Zion’s Camp traveled from Kirtland, Ohio, to Missouri in 1834 to restore the Jackson County Saints to their land. Far West was the largest Mormon settlement in Missouri. Adam-ondi-Ahman was identified in upper Missouri as the site where a future great gathering will take place when Jesus Christ comes to meet with Adam and his righteous posterity.
