The Mormon influence in Mesa dates back to the 1800’s when the then leader of the LDS church, Brigham Young, sent a group of followers to Arizona to colonize the region around 1875. Led by Daniel Webster Jones, the settlement was originally called Jonesville, but was later incorporated (in 1883) as Mesa.
